Periodontitis
- Gum recession (gums pulling away from the teeth)
- Tooth mobility
- Chronic infections
- Tooth loss
Why does periodontitis appear?
The main cause is the accumulation of bacterial plaque at the base of the teeth.
However, several factors can accelerate the progression of the disease:
- Poor oral hygiene
- Smoking
- Diabetes or other systemic diseases
- Genetic predisposition
- Stress and low immunity
- Incorrect bite (malocclusion)
Periodontitis is a chronic condition.
It does not go away on its own and cannot be treated only with toothpaste or mouthwash.
Signs that indicate periodontitis
- bleeding during brushing or chewing
- persistent bad breath
- inflamed, red, or painful gums
- visible gum recession
- newly formed spaces between the teeth
- teeth that are moving
Gum bleeding is never normal and is the earliest warning sign.
Modern treatment of periodontitis
The therapy is adapted to each stage of the disease and may include:
1. Deep subgingival cleaning (scaling and root planing): Removes plaque and tartar accumulated under the gums, where the toothbrush cannot reach.
2. HELBO antibacterial laser therapy
A minimally invasive technique that:
- eliminates pathogenic bacteria
- reduces inflammation and gum bleeding
- accelerates the healing process
- significantly reduces the risk of tooth loss
This method offers a major advantage for patients in Chișinău, providing superior results in controlling periodontal disease.
3. Bite stabilization and dental protection: Bruxism can worsen periodontitis. In such cases, a personalized mouthguard and bite correction are recommended.
4. Regular monitoring and maintenance: Check-ups are performed every 3–6 months to prevent reinfection.
How do we establish the diagnosis?
- clinical examination of the gums and tooth mobility
- measurement of periodontal pocket depths
- digital imaging (panoramic X-ray or CBCT)
When detected early, the disease can be stopped before severe complications appear.
Can periodontitis be cured?
Periodontitis is a chronic condition, but it can be effectively controlled. With proper treatment and good oral hygiene, patients can keep their natural teeth for many years.
The collaboration between doctor and patient is essential for long-term success.
What happens without treatment?
- the teeth become increasingly mobile
- the infection spreads into the bone
- abscesses and chronic pain may appear
- the teeth are lost one by one
In such situations, rehabilitation becomes complex and expensive, requiring dental implants and bone grafting. Periodontitis is a silent disease but with severe consequences if ignored.
Early treatment and the personalized plans offered at Mr Dent Clinic can stop the progression of the disease and preserve your smile’s health long-term.
