Dental veneers: indications, contraindications, and what Instagram doesn’t tell you

Dental veneers

Dental veneers can quickly transform a smile, but they are not suitable for everyone. Find out when they are recommended, what risks they involve, and the truth beyond Instagram filters. Information from the specialists at Mr Dent Clinic, Chișinău.

Why are veneers so popular?

Dental veneers have become the symbol of the “perfect smile”: aligned, white, proportional, and symmetrical teeth. Influencers, celebrities, and many young people choose veneers for a fast aesthetic transformation. But veneers are not just a trend — they can correct real issues such as stains, eroded enamel, chipped teeth, small gaps, or unaesthetic shapes. The final result is spectacular, but success depends on the correct indication and the quality of the dentist and the laboratory.

What exactly are veneers?

Veneers are very thin “shells” made of ceramic or composite that adhere to the visible surface of the teeth. Ceramics is preferred because of its strength and extremely natural appearance, almost identical to enamel. To apply them, teeth require minimal preparation — sometimes even no drilling, if the case allows it (no-prep veneers). However, there is no universal treatment: what works for one person may be wrong for another.

When are dental veneers recommended?

Veneers are suitable when the patient has:

  • stained enamel, fluorosis, or deep discolorations
  • unaesthetic or disproportionate tooth shapes
  • minor rotations or gaps between teeth
  • chipped or fractured edges
  • short or worn teeth due to bruxism (after stabilizing the bite)

The truth is: veneers are an excellent solution for a perfect smile only if the teeth are otherwise healthy.

When are veneers NOT recommended? Real contraindications

Instagram doesn’t talk about situations where veneers can cause more harm than good. The dentist may recommend another treatment if there are:

  • untreated cavities or gum inflammation
  • very thin enamel or severe abrasion
  • uncontrolled bruxism
  • severe malocclusions requiring orthodontics
  • highly mobile teeth or advanced periodontitis

In these cases, veneers do not solve the problem — they only hide it temporarily, and complications appear quickly.

What Instagram doesn’t tell you

On social media you only see “before and after”.
What’s missing?

  • Veneers are a medical procedure — not a filter
  • They require digital aesthetic planning and a mock-up beforehand
  • Modified enamel cannot be “put back”
  • Shade selection must match skin tone, age, gums, and facial profile
  • Long-lasting results demand proper hygiene and regular check-ups

A smile without compromises requires time, expertise, and close collaboration between dentist and technician.

What is the process like at Mr Dent Clinic?

During the consultation, we assess gum health, bite, and enamel structure. We take photos, scans, and create a digital plan. Before the final decision, the patient can see a smile simulation directly on their teeth — helping them make the most informed choice.

Our philosophy:
Less drilling. More natural appearance. Personalized results.

Dental veneers are a unique treatment — they can completely transform a smile and significantly boost self-confidence.

But the decision must be made in the dental office, not on Instagram.
A proper consultation is the difference between an amazing result and a compromised one.
